How do I know if I'm at risk of developing Osteoporosis?

Risk factors for osteoporotic fracture can be split between things you can change and things you can't change.

Risk factors you can do nothing about
  • A history of fractures as an adult
  • A family history of fractures
  • Being female
  • Being elderly
  • Having European or Asian ancestry
  • Having dementia
Risk factors you may be able to eliminate:
  • Prolonged intake of steroid drugs
  • Smoking
  • High intake of soft drinks (containing phosphoric acid)
  • Low body weight (if you are lighter than 127lbs or 58kg)
  • Having an estrogen deficiency
  • Early menopause (younger than 45 years)
  • Having had a bilateral oopherectomy (both ovaries removed)
  • Premature ovarian failure
  • Very irregular periods
  • Low calcium and vitamin D intake
  • Alcoholism
  • Sedentary lifestyle
  • Coeliac disease (can stop the body from absorbing calcium)
