Risk factors you can do nothing about
- A history of
fractures as an adult
- A family
history of fractures
- Being
female
- Being
elderly
- Having
European or Asian ancestry
- Having
dementia
Risk factors you may be able to
eliminate:
- Prolonged
intake of steroid drugs
- Smoking
- High intake of
soft drinks (containing phosphoric
acid)
- Low body
weight (if you are lighter than
127lbs or 58kg)
- Having an
estrogen deficiency
- Early
menopause (younger than 45
years)
- Having had a
bilateral oopherectomy (both
ovaries removed)
- Premature
ovarian failure
- Very irregular
periods
- Low calcium
and vitamin D intake

- Sedentary lifestyle
- Coeliac
disease (can stop the body from
absorbing calcium)
